The work of technical standardization in the country was started by the Czechoslovak Electrotechnical Association, established in 1919, and by the Czechoslovak Association of Standardization, established in 1922. In 1951, the activities of the two organizations were combined, and the Office for Standardization and Measurements was set up. The Federal Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing was established in 1968.
Since January 1993, after the splitting of Czechoslovakia into two independent states, the Czech Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing has undertaken coordination functions in standardization, metrology and testing in the Czech Republic. The Czech Standards Institute was established that same year.
Since 1997, the Czech Standards Institute, on the basis of an authorization from the Ministry of Industry and Trade provided under Act 22/1997 Coll. on technical requirements for products and on amendments of some acts, has become the National Standards Body for all fields of standardization. As of 31 December 2008, the Institute was dissolved by decision of the Ministry.
Since 1 January 2009, the development and publication of standards in the Czech Republic have been ensured by the Czech Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing (UNMZ), on the basis of Act 22/1997 Coll.
Note: Statistical data relate to the Czech Standards Institute that was dissolved as of 2008-12-31. The legal status is relevant to UNMZ.
